SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VOCABULARY SELF COLLECTION STRATEGY USING LET’S READ AS LEARNING MEDIA IN IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXT FOR EIGHTH GRADERS
Along with speaking, listening, and writing, reading is one of the most fundamental skills students at all educational levels need to acquire. The ability to read comprehensively is a source of knowledge to master other skills. Based on the observations at SMPN 8 Magelang, the writer discovered several problems related to teaching and learning process, mostly with reading comprehension. Moreover, the writer addressed the problem of students’ difficulties in determining the effective strategy to improve reading comprehension, as well as the lack of learning media as a source of interactive reading text that can help attract students’ attention. Therefore, appropriate learning strategy and learning media are essential. Teachers can employ the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy using Let’s Read as learning media to overcome the problems and improve students’ reading comprehension. The objective of this study was: (1) to find out the significant difference in reading comprehension of narrative text between students who are taught using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy with Let’s Read as learning media and those who are taught using Small Group Discussion. and (2) to find out whether the use of Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy using Let’s Read as learning media is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. This study employed a quantitative research method and utilized a quasiexperimental design. The population consisted of 214 eighth graders from SMPN 8 Magelang, which was divided into seven classes. The sample included two classes: 30 students from class VIII E as the experimental class and 30 students from class VIII C as the control class. The data was collected through a reading test and analyzed using the SPSS statistics V27 program. According to the results of the independent sample t-test, the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.005, less than the significance level 0.05 (0.005 < 0.05). It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, which means that there is a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension of narrative text between students who are taught using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy with Let’s Read as learning media and the students who are taught using Small Group Discussion strategy. It can be concluded that the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy using Let’s Read as learning media is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension of narrative text for eighth graders in SMPN 8 Magelang. As a suggestion, in the future, the teachers can apply this strategy, assisted by the learning media, to help improve students’ reading comprehension.
