SKRIPSI ANALYSIS OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS IN 4TH SEMESTER STUDENTS’ UTTERANCES IN ENGLISH DEBATE AND CRITICAL THINKING CLASS AT UNIVERSITAS TIDAR IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024
Illocutionary acts enable speakers to convey their message and perform
actions through their utterances. In a classroom debate setting, understanding
illocutionary acts is crucial for achieving successful communication. Many students
have difficulty not only with speaking but also with understanding the implied
meaning of utterances. Understanding illocutionary acts helps interpret the context
and the implied meanings behind students' statements. It enhances the ability to use
language more purposefully and strategically to fulfill specific communication
 goals.
This research aimed to analyze the types of illocutionary acts found in the
students’ utterances in the English debate and critical thinking class at Universitas
Tidar in the academic year 2023/2024. It also investigated the implied meaning
behind the utterances used in the classroom debate. The study is important in
helping both students and educators understand how language functions
 pragmatically in spoken academic discourse.
This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected
through video recordings and transcripts of classroom debate activities. The writer
then analyzed the utterances by classifying them based on the theory of
illocutionary acts by Senft (2014) as cited in (Senft, 2014) and the set of
illocutionary verbs, including state, assert, argue, describe, warn, criticize,
apologize, request, and others. Data validation was conducted through triangulation
and an expert to ensure the accuracy of the implied meaning interpretation.
