SKRIPSI DEVELOPING "GRAB AND GO" ENGLISH POCKET BOOK FOR EFL LEARNERS AS STAFFS IN TAMAN KYAI LANGGENG ECOPARK
As tourism destination, having an internationalization vision means that it is necessary to provide the standard facility, such as English proficiency. Moreover, staffs in tourism destination are required to be able to communicate in English to have interaction with foreign visitors. However, staffs in TKL Ecopark do not have adequate English proficiency. There is also no English learning source that has been provided by TKL Ecopark to support the staff in having adequate English proficiency as well as to support the goal to be globally well-known. Considering the essential role of English learning source, this research is intended to propose a solution, which is developing an English Pocket Book. Therefore, this English pocket book “Grab and Go†integrates some aspects in it, such as English for Specific Purposes, English for Tourism, and material development. It discovers the potential of English pocket book to help the staff in having communication with foreign visitors. It also focuses in the material and the need of the staff in TKL Ecopark that is suitable for the operational services in supporting the internationalization vision. This study uses the Design-based Research (DBR) model proposed by Plomp (2013) to answer the objective of this study. There are three stages in conducting this study, which are preliminary research phase, development or prototyping phase, and assessment phase. This study is classified as DBR because it involves designing and developing a product that can be solution for a problem. The result showed that the design and presentation of the pocket book, which includes the use of fonts, illustrations, and the material enhance their learning interest. Furthermore, the delivery of material also found crucial in enhancing the comprehension of the staff. Relevant material, such as real-world example helps them in connecting to their professional role. Moreover, aligning the use of language with their English proficiency makes them understand the material better. However, there are disadvantages of this pocket book. Since it is a printed material, it may be easily damaged due to the daily use. In addition, it is possible for printed material to be outdated because the rapid development of the study related. The “Grab and Go†English pocket book received positive feedback from the users, which is operational staffs, with score ranging from 77% to 79% that falls in the category of very worthy. Moreover, users found the material helpful and practical, especially in improving their communication with foreign visitors as well as supporting TKL Ecopark’s aim to become more internationally recognized. Further researcher can add the analysis from visitor point of view. In addition, the English pocket book can be used by both staffs and visitors
