SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING SEMIOTIC FEATURES USED IN PICTURE-CUED TASK IN THE ENGLISH TEXTBOOK “LIFE TODAY†FOR THE TWELFTH GRADERS
This study explores the semiotic features in picture-cued tasks within the English textbook Bahasa Inggris: Life Today for twelfth graders. Using Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic model (representamen, object, interpretant), the research analyzes how meaning is constructed visually and how these visuals relate to the values in the Pancasila Student Profile under the Merdeka Curriculum.. The literature review outlines key frameworks: the Merdeka Curriculum, Pancasila Student Profile dimensions, and semiotic theory. Previous studies focus largely on text-based or elementary-level materials, leaving a gap in visual analysis for senior high school textbooks, particularly in relation to character education. This qualitative content analysis uses documentation methods and follows Ary et al.’s procedures to examine nine picture-cued tasks. Each image is analyzed using Peirce’s model, and the presence of Pancasila dimensions is identified. Findings show that icons dominate the visual elements, with indexes and symbols appearing variably. The most commonly reflected value is “Faith, Piety to God Almighty, and Noble Character,†while other dimensions appear inconsistently. Notably, one task (Data 6) lacks any clear Pancasila representation.. In conclusion, semiotic analysis helps reveal deeper meanings in textbook visuals and supports student understanding. However, the integration of Pancasila values is uneven, suggesting a need for better visual alignment with character education goals in textbook design.
