SKRIPSI THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE STUDENTS’ SELF-ESTEEM TOWARD SPEAKING PERFORMANCE ABILITY FOR THE TENTH GRADES AT SMAN 2 MAGELANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2024/2025
self-esteem as an individual's evaluative attitude toward themselves, reflecting their perceived capability, significance, success, and worthiness. Speaking constitutes a fundamental component of linguistic interaction that facilitates social communication, enhances emotional intelligence, and enables effective expression of ideas and opinions. Within the speaking acquisition process, self-confidence emerges as a pivotal personal characteristic that determines success or failure in developing English speaking performance ability. This study pursued two primary aims: (1) to assess the students’ self-esteem related to students’ speaking performance ability the tenth grades students’ of SMAN 2 Magelang, and (2) to analyze the correlation between students’ selfesteem and their speaking performance ability at the tenth grades students’ of SMAN 2 Magelang. The research employed a quantitative correlational design utilizing the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI), adapted from Fajrin (2021), to measure self-esteem levels. Speaking ability was assessed through monologue recording performance tests. The study involved 70 tenth-grade students from SMAN 2 Magelang, selected through random sampling procedures. Data collection employed questionnaires and performance assessments, with analysis conducted using Pearson product-moment correlation calculations both manually and through SPSS 26. Results demonstrated a strong positive correlation between student selfesteem and speaking performance ability, evidenced by a correlation coefficient of 0.668. Hypothesis testing revealed a significance level (2-tailed) of 0.005, below the conventional threshold of 0.05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis was accepted while the null hypothesis was rejected. The study establishes a significant relationship between self-esteem and speaking performance ability among tenthgrade students at SMAN 2 Magelang. The findings recommend that educators prioritize students' self-esteem development in speaking instruction, while students should cultivate confidence in their English learning endeavors.
