SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LIGHTENING THE LEARNING CLIMATE (LLC) STRATEGY ON READING COMPREHENSION SKILL OF THE EIGHTH GRADERS AT SMP NEGERI 4 KOTA MAGELANG
In learning English, four essential skills should be mastered: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. From those skills, mastering reading comprehension is often considered challenging, as it requires students to grasp the meaning of the text itself. In addition, it is not easy to understand for junior high school students due to several things, such as the difficulty of foreign languages, students’ background knowledge, students’ learning motivation, and learning strategies applied in class. However, during the researcher’s observation, the eighth graders at SMP Negeri 4 Kota Magelang encountered several difficulties regarding reading comprehension. It makes the researcher demand suitable learning strategies to facilitate students’ comprehension of the material taught. This research aims to determine whether there is a significant difference on reading comprehension skill between those taught using the Lightening the Learning Strategy (LLC) and those taught using the Expository strategy. This research also determines how effective the Lightening the Learning Climate (LLC) strategy is on reading comprehension skill. This research carried out quantitative research using a quasi-experimental design. Two classes of eighth graders were chosen for this research, class 1 as the experimental class and class 2 as the control class, with a total of 64 students at SMP Negeri 4 Kota Magelang. Reading comprehension tests were carried out for both classes as the instrument for collecting data. The data was analyzed statistically using an independent sample t-test in SPSS version 25. This research reveals that both groups experienced an improvement in the score post-test, even though the control group got higher in the pre-test. However, the experimental group showed higher improvement in their post-test scores than the control group in the post-test scores. In the t-test results, the sig. (2-tailed) value shows a result of 0.013, which means less than 0.05. It indicates a significant difference in reading comprehension skill between the two groups. This result indicates that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. At the same time, the value of the N-gain test shows a result of 0.55, which is in the medium category. This indicates that the LLC strategy is quite effective in this research. The researcher concludes that the Lightening the Learning Climate (LLC) strategy improved students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts by fostering active participation and idea sharing. Future research should broaden the scope of this research to include other learning materials and situations.
