SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PROBLEM-SOLVING READING STRATEGY TOWARD THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF MTS MA'ARIF DAWUNG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2024/2025

Reading is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in students’ academic success, especially in understanding narrative texts. However, many junior high school students in Indonesia, including those at MTs Ma’arif Dawung, struggle with reading due to limited vocabulary, poor comprehension of text structures, and a lack of effective reading strategies. In response to these issues, the Indonesian government introduced Kurikulum Merdeka as an educational reform that emphasizes reading comprehension, critical thinking, and student-centered learning as key expectations for improving literacy outcomes. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Problem-solving Reading Strategy on the reading achievement of eighth-grade students at MTs Ma’arif Dawung during the 2024/2025 academic year. A quasi-experimental design was employed with a total sample of 60 students selected through purposive sampling. The experimental group was taught using the Problem-solving Reading Strategy, while the control group received traditional instruction. Data were collected through a reading comprehension test focused on narrative texts. The results showed a significant difference in reading achievement between the two groups. The experimental group’s average score increased from 58.37 to 82.40, while the control group’s score rose from 49.07 to 55.57. The t-test results indicated a t-value higher than the t-table (7.490 > 2.001), and the N-Gain score of 0.6259 categorized the strategy as moderately effective. In conclusion, the Problem-solving Reading Strategy significantly enhanced students’ reading achievement in narrative texts. This strategy effectively supported the goals and expectations set by the Kurikulum Merdeka, particularly in developing students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities.
