SKRIPSI DEVELOPING TEACHING INSTRUCTION USING GAINING ATTENTION STRATEGY THROUGH MENTIMETER AS MEDIA FOR ESSAY WRITING OF ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITAS TIDAR
Essay writing is a crucial skill for learning English in college. However, many
students still struggle with expressing ideas, developing essay structures, and
maintaining coherence between paragraphs. One approach that can be used to
overcome this problem is the Gaining Attention strategy, which aims to attract
attention and motivate students from the outset of learning. The appropriate
supporting media for this strategy is Mentimeter, an interactive web-based platform
that allows active student participation.
This study aims to develop a teaching instruction product by integrating the Gaining
Attention strategy through Mentimeter as a learning medium in the Introduction to
Essay Writing class. This product is designed to help students initiate the essay
writing process more easily, interestingly, and enjoyably, and encourage them to
think critically and actively in class.
This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, utilising the
ADD (Analyse, Design, Develop) model. Data were collected through
questionnaires distributed to 44 students and one lecturer also document (RPS). The
teaching instructions were developed based on Brown’s (2015) writing stages.
Silberman’s (2005) Gaining Attention strategy was explicitly applied to the pre
writing stage, utilising Mentimeter’s interactive features, including word clouds,
polling, and open-ended questions.
