SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF READING MATERIALS IN THE MERDEKA CURRICULUM-BASED TEXTBOOK FOR SEVENTH GRADERS ENTITLED “BRIGHT AN ENGLISHâ€
Textbooks are indispensable tools in the educational landscape, fulfilling various functions that support both teaching and learning. Their role in individualizing instruction, guiding educators, and providing quality resources is essential for achieving successful educational outcomes. For achieving learning goals, the materials in the textbook must be good. One effective way to assess the quality of textbook materials is through content analysis. This research analyzes the reading materials in the EFL textbook "Bright An English" for seventh graders, developed based on the Merdeka Curriculum. The study aims to determine whether these materials meet the criteria for good learning resources as proposed by the Pusat Perbukuan, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. The analysis focuses on the aspect of content that is essential for effective learning. The study employed content analysis with a descriptive qualitative research design. The data collection applied is the documentation technique. The data collected is data from reading materials, consisting of reading texts and reading tasks. There are two research instruments, consisting of the writer and an observation checklist. The observation checklist contains eight criteria from the content aspect, where each chapter in the textbook is analyzed using these criteria. The result of the study showed that there are 8 chapters in Bright An English textbook, and the reading material in the textbook fulfills 50 scores from the aspect of content criteria. The first criteria, which is the alignment between the materials and the curriculum, is divided into three learning targets. Seven chapters meet the first target, all eight chapters meet the second, and six chapters meet the third. The second criteria, which is the variety of text genres, is fully met by all chapters. The third criteria, related to the appropriate level of text difficulty, is only fulfilled by three chapters. For the fourth criteria, reading tasks that help develop students’ skills, all chapters meet the standard. The fifth criteria, supporting life skills, is only met by two chapters. Lastly, the sixth criteria, which is avoiding sensitive issues related to gender, race, or religion, is met by all eight chapters. With a maximum possible score of 64, the Bright An English textbook meets 78% of the content aspect criteria from Pusat Perbukuan. This places it in the “Fair†category, meaning the textbook is generally suitable for teaching English, in the Merdeka Curriculum. To fulfill all content requirements and maximize learning outcomes, teachers need additional learning resources, especially those that address areas where the Bright An English textbook falls short. These include materials that are appropriately leveled for students' reading abilities and those that support the development of essential life skills.
