SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ASTRID APPLICATION IN INCREASING THE NARRATIVE TEXT SPEAKING SKILL OF THE EIGHTH GRADERS IN SMPN 1 TENGARAN
Speaking is a productive skill in English that plays a crucial role in communication. However, many students still struggle with speaking due to limited vocabulary, poor pronunciation, and a lack of confidence. This is due to the teaching methods used and the lack of student interest in learning to speak. Traditional teaching methods often fail to engage students and do not provide enough speaking practice. To address this issue, the Astrid application is proposed as a tool for speaking practice. This study aims to determine whether there is a significant difference in students' speaking skills after they are taught using the Astrid application compared to those who are taught using the Beespeaker application. The study also aims to assess the effectiveness of the Astrid application in enhancing students' pronunciation, fluency, and overall speaking skill in English. This study used quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design. The writer involved two groups: an experimental group that was taught using the Astrid application and a control group that was taught using the Beespeaker application. Data were analyzed using an independent t-test and N-gain scores to measure the effectiveness of treatment. Analysis was performed using SPSS 22. The result showed a significant difference in speaking skill between students taught using the Astrid Application and those taught using the Beespeaker application. The experimental group achieved a higher posttest mean score (82.74) than the control group (76.00). An independent t-test revealed a significance value of 0.001, indicating a statistically significant difference. The N-Gain score further confirmed this, with the experimental group reaching 46.87% (less effectiveness), while the control group only reached 28.83% (ineffective). However, the writer suggests that the English teacher can use this application as an additional tool because it can increase students’ speaking skill, including their fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. Based on these findings, further researcher is encouraged to explore the long-term impact of using the Astrid Application across different types of speaking text, investigate students' and teachers’ perception of AI-assisted learning tools, and conduct qualitative or mixed-method studies to examine how digital speaking applications influence learner motivation, anxiety, and engagement in more depth.
