SKRIPSI THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SQ3R STRATEGY TO IMPROVE READING SKILL FOR SEVENTH GRADERS AT SMP IT IHSANUL FIKRI KOTA MAGELANG
Reading skill is a fundamental skill in English learning, yet many junior high
school students still face difficulties in identifying main ideas, details, and
making inferences from texts. To address this issue, effective strategies are
needed to improve students’ reading abilities. One such method is the SQ3R
(Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review) strategy, which emphasizes
active engagement with texts. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness
of the SQ3R strategy in improving the reading comprehension skills of
seventh-grade students. The research employed a Classroom Action
Research (CAR) design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model,
consisting of two cycles with four stages each: planning, action, observation,
and reflection. The participants were 16 male students from class 7A in the
first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through
observation
sheets,
documentation,
questionnaires,
and
reading
comprehension tests. The success criterion was set at a Minimum Passing
Mark (MPM) of 77. The findings demonstrated a steady improvement in
students’ reading comprehension across the cycles. The average pre-test
score was 63.1, which increased to 74.4 in Cycle I, and further improved to
83.7 in Cycle II, surpassing the set MPM. Observations and questionnaires
also indicated greater student engagement, enhanced ability to identify main
ideas and details, and improved recall of information. The implementation
of the SQ3R strategy significantly improved students’ reading skill and
engagement in the classroom. The systematic process of Survey, Question,
Read, Recite, and Review helped students process information more
effectively, leading to higher test scores and stronger comprehension. The
study suggests that the SQ3R strategy is a practical and effective approach
for English teachers to adopt in fostering reading skills among junior high
school students. Future studies may examine its long-term impact or
integration with other strategies to further strengthen literacy development
