SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING COPING STRATEGIES OF STUDENTS WITH LOW SELF-CONFIDENCE IN ENGLISH-SPEAKING ANXIETY AT MAN 1 MAGELANG
This study was motivated by the low self-confidence of students in speaking
English, which often triggers speaking anxiety in the classroom. According to
Lazarus and Folkman (1984), coping refers to individuals’ efforts to manage
stressful demands, which can be categorized into problem-focused coping and
emotion-focused coping. Folkman (2010) further introduced meaning-focused
coping and future-oriented coping as more proactive strategies. Based on this
theoretical framework, the aim of this study was to identify the coping strategies
used by students with low self-confidence to manage their English-speaking anxiety
and to determine the most commonly used strategies.
This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The
participants were 12 students of class XI Agama at MAN 1 Magelang, selected
through purposive sampling based on classroom observation using an observation
checklist. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and
students’ written responses, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s (1994)
interactive model.
