SKRIPSI DEVELOPING A SUPPLEMENTARY READING MATERIAL AS A DIGITAL FLIPBOOK USING MAGELANG FOLKLORE FOR TENTH GRADE OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Reading comprehension is one of the important skills in learning English, yet many students still face difficulties accessing the material that is relevant to them. Most existing materials are general content that does not always align with students’ cultural backgrounds. Therefore, it is important to integrate local culture into reading materials to increase students’ motivation and understanding. This study addresses that need by developing a supplementary reading material in the form of a digital flipbook based on Magelang folklore. The use of folklore is expected to improve reading comprehension and strengthen cultural awareness. The objectives of this research were divided into three parts. First, it was to analyse students’ needs and learning objectives related to supplementary material in English learning. Second, it was designed and developed as a digital flipbook to make the content interactive and relevant to local culture. Third, the goal was to evaluate the feasibility of the developed product to ensure its effective implementation in the classroom. These objectives were formulated to answer the problem statements and to contribute to the field of material development. The study employed the Design and Development Research (DDR) model as proposed by Richey and Klein (2007). The DDR model consists of three stages, namely analysis, design and development, and evaluation. In the analysis stage, students’ needs and learning objectives were identified through questionnaires and interviews. In the design and development stage, the researcher created content drafts, storyboards, and layouts using Canva. At the same time, Kotobee Author was utilised to add interactive features, such as practice or review, that students could answer immediately. The final product resulted in a digital flipbook with Magelang local folklore narratives. The feasibility of the product was validated by two experts, focusing on material and media aspects. The material scored 97% and the media aspect 82.5%, both categorized as feasible based on Sugiyono (2016). Validators suggested improvements such as a more straightforward layout, concise sentences, accessible QR codes, and inclusion of author information. However, the developed digital flipbook is feasible to be used as supplementary material that integrates Magelang folklore. Hopefully, this product can improve students' reading comprehension.
