SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF WORD CARDS GAME AS A TEACHING MEDIA ON DESCRIPTIVE TEXT WRITING SKILL OF GRADE VII AT SMP NEGERI 1 MERTOYUDAN
Writing is one of the most challenging skills in English learning because it requires students to develop ideas, organize them coherently, and use appropriate vocabulary and grammar. In reality, many seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Mertoyudan have difficulties in writing descriptive texts, especially in finding ideas, mastering vocabulary, and applying grammar rules correctly. Previous learning media, such as Student Worksheets and mind maps, have not been fully effective in helping students overcome these problems. Therefore, this study utilizes the Word Cards Game as an alternative learning media to provide more structured support and create a more interactive learning atmosphere. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Word Cards Game in improving students' skills to write descriptive text. Furthermore, this study applied a quantitative approach by using a quasi-experimental design. The population in this study included seventh-grade students, of whom two classes were selected as samples. The experimental class was taught using the Word Cards Game, while the control class was taught using the Mind Map. Both classes were given a pre-test and a post-test. The data were analyzed using the normality and homogeneity tests, followed by the N-Gain test and independent sample t-test with the help of SPSS 27.0. The results showed that the experimental class experienced a higher improvement than the control class. The average post-test score of the experimental class (78.66) was higher than that of the control class (70.69). The experimental class N-Gain score of 0.3522 was in the medium category, while the control class only reached 0.1669 in the low category. In addition, the t-test results show a significance value smaller than 0.05, which means that there is a significant difference between the two groups. This proves that Word Cards Game is effective in improving students' descriptive text writing skills. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that Word Cards Game is a practical and interesting learning media, which not only improves students' writing skills but also encourages their motivation and participation in class. The keywords on the cards help students construct sentences more systematically and organize them into paragraphs. In addition, the interactive nature of the game supports student-centered learning, in line with the Merdeka Curriculum. Thus, Word Cards Game can be considered as an effective media alternative in learning writing in junior high school.
