SKRIPSI THE INFLUENCE OF STUDENTS MOTIVATION ON READING SHORT STORIES ON THEIR WRITING ABILITY OF THE SECOND YEAR OF SMAN 1 MUNTILAN IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2004/2005
Students writing ability is difficult to acquire because usually in writing students should express their ideas but they are limited in vocabulary. Giving motivation to students to read may help students in writing. Short stories might motivate them to read because it usually contains interesting story. Besides, students can get many new words and much knowledge about writing.
This research is aimed to prove that students motivation on reading short stories has a significant correlation to their writing ability. This research is also aimed to find out the contributions given by the students motivation on reading short stories to writing ability.
From the above explanations, the researcher puts forward the hypotheses as follows
1. There is a significant influence of students motivation on reading short stories on their writing ability.
2. There is a significant contribution of students motivation on reading short stories on their writing ability.
To prove those hypotheses, the researcher carried out a research on the second year students of SMAN I Muntilan. The researcher took forty out of two hundreds students as samples.
In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire and test. After giving questionnaire and test to the respondents, the researcher analyzed the data by using the r. product moment correlation formula to find out the strength of the relationship between the two variables. Then the results were consulted to the table of significance level. To know the contribution, the researcher used the linear regression formula.
The result of statistical calculation is as follows r obtained is 0.478 and the figure in r table is 0.312. It shows that the r obtained is higher than the figure shown on the r table, therefore there is a significant influence of the students motivation on reading short stories to their writing ability. To know the contribution given by the students motivation on reading short stories to writing ability, she analyzed the data by linear regression formula. The result of the analysis is Y, 36.81 plus 0.434 x.
Based on the analysis above, the researcher sums up that there is a significant correlation between the students motivation on reading short stories on their writing ability of the second year of SMAN I Muntilan in the academic year 2004 2005. It is concluded that 22.84 percent of students writing ability is influenced by their motivation on reading short stories and 77.16 percent of students writing ability is influenced by other factors.
