NANIEK ROELIJANI. (2002). The Influence of Teachers' Competence on the Third Year Students' English Achievement of the Junior High Schools throughout Magelang City in the School Year 2001/2002. Paper. Magelang: English Department. Faculty of Teachers' Training and Education. Tidar University of Magelang.
The purpose of this research is to prove that teachers' competence influences the third year students' English achievement of the Junior High Schools throughout Magelang City.
Based on the above statement, the researcher puts forward two hypotheses as follows:
1. Teachers' competence has a positive influence on students' English achievement.
2. Teachers' competence gives a significant contribution to students' English achievement.
To prove the above hypotheses, the researcher conducted a research in Magelang City. She took 12 out of 28 teachers of the Junior High Schools throughout the city as samples and did it by random sampling technique with a lottery to decide the samples. To collect the data of teachers' competence, the researcher used a questionnaire and gave it to the Headmaster or to the English teacher who was not a sample, whereas in collecting the data of students' English achievement, she used their scores of the National Final Examination of the school year 2001/2002.
After the data had been collected, they were analyzed with the Product Moment Correlation formula to know the correlation between the teachers' competence and the students' English achievement. Then the Simple Linear Regression formula with F-test was used to know the amount of contribution given by the teachers' competence to the students' English achievement. The result of the Product Moment calculation is 0.677 whereas the figure on table r is 0.576, so the researcher draws a conclusion that the calculated r is higher than the figure on r table or 0.677 > 0.576 and accordingly, the first hypothesis above proves true and can be accepted. By simple regression analysis, it can be produced: Y = 2.242 + 0,549 X. It means that each increase of one standard deviation of variable X (teachers' competence) will be always followed by 0.549 of the increase of variable Y (students' achievement of English). Based on the result, the researcher draws a conclution that teachers' competence gives a significant contribution to students' achievement of English. The contribution of teachers' competence to students' achievement of English is 45.8%, therefore the second hypothesis above proves
true and can be accepted too. Finally, it is suggested that the English teachers should increase their competence, so that their students' English achievement will increase.
