SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OPEN ENDED QUESTION STRATEGY TO ENHANCE NARRATIVE TEXT READING COMPREHENSION FOR THE EIGHTH GRADERS
Reading comprehension plays a crucial role in supporting students’ success in
learning English, yet many junior high school students still faced the barriers and
struggle in reading comprehension, especially to comprehend narrative texts
effectively.
The aims of this study were (1) to analyze the effectiveness of open ended
question strategy in enhancing students' narrative text reading comprehension of
eighth graders in SMP Negeri 8 Magelang, and (2) To describe the significant
difference in narrative text reading comprehension achievement between students
taught using open ended question strategy and those taught using close ended
question strategy.
This study employed a quasi-experimental design involving two eighth
grade classes of SMP Negeri 8 Magelang, consisting of an experimental group (8E)
and a control group (8G). The students were given a pre-test and post-test, and the
data were analyzed using a non-parametric statistical test due to the score
distribution not meeting normality assumptions.
The results revealed that the students in the experimental group achieved
higher enhancement and more consistent performance compared to the control
group. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing showed a significant difference between
the two groups, proved by the significance value was less than 0.05 and the
enhancement of mean score, indicating that the open ended question strategy was
more effective in enhancing narrative text reading comprehension than the closed
ended question strategy. In conclusion, applying open ended question enabled
students to think more critically, interpreting and analyzing, construct meaning
independently, and better comprehend the elements of narrative text.
