SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING THE SPEECH FUNCTIONS USED IN THEWIZARDLIZ YOUTUBE VIDEOS AND ITS IMPLICATION IN SPEAKING SKILL LEARNING
As digital technology continues to shape education, YouTube serves as an effective platform that exposes learners to authentic examples of language use and communication. Thewizardliz is recognized as a content creator who delivers motivational messages focusing on self-improvement, confidence, and emotional empowerment through monologue-style videos. Such content is suitable as a learning resource for developing students’ language skills, particularly speaking, as it provides exposure to real, functional English in context. This study is designed to explore how language functions are realized in digital motivational discourse. Specifically, the research aims to deepen the understanding of how speech functions operate within Thewizardliz’s YouTube videos and how they can be pedagogically applied in language learning. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to: (1) identify the types of speech functions used in Thewizardliz’s videos, (2) determine the most dominant type of speech function, and (3) examine their pedagogical implications for speaking skill learning. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design to analyze the linguistic and pedagogical aspects of the data. The data were obtained from three selected videos on Thewizardliz YouTube channel through documentation analysis, supported by semistructured interviews with four English Education students to enhance data validity. To ensure credibility and trustworthiness, this study implemented investigator triangulation and data triangulation. The results revealed a total of 166 utterances, comprising 36 expressive, 81 directive, 41 referential, and 8 phatic functions; metalinguistic and poetic functions were not identified. The directive function emerged as the most dominant type, reflecting the motivational and advisory characteristics of Thewizardliz’s discourse. This is consistent with Holmes' theoretical claim that speech functions not only serve linguistic purposes but also social roles. These findings indicate that YouTube can serve as an effective supplementary medium for language learning, as it promotes students’ awareness of functional language use, enriches vocabulary, supports pronunciation practice, and builds confidence in oral communication.
