SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING STUDENT- TEACHER CONFERENCES STRATEGY IN IMPROVING DISCUSSION TEXT SPEAKING SKILL AMONG THE TWELFTH-GRADERS AT SMAN 2 MAGELANG
The role of communication in teaching and learning has become
increasingly vital, as it serves as the foundation for conveying information and ideas
effectively. However, some students still have low discussion text speaking skills,
which often stem from difficulties in constructing logical arguments, using
persuasive language, and organizing ideas coherently. The student-teacher
conferences strategy is a strategy that involves establishing structured channels for
regular and meaningful interactions between students and teachers.
The first objective of the study was to determine whether there are any
significant differences in the discussion text speaking skill of the twelfth-graders at
SMAN 2 Magelang between those taught using student-teacher conferences
strategy and those taught using lecturing strategy. The second objective was to
know how effective the use of student-teacher conference strategy in improving the
discussion text speaking skill of the twelfth-graders at SMAN 2 Magelang.
This study used a quasi-experimental design. The participants were the XII
F1.2 and XII-F1.3 classes, and the data were collected using oral speaking tests.
The data were analyzed using classified testing, which contained normality,
homogeneity, and linearity tests and a hypothesis test which contained calculation
of the t-test, the Mann-Whitney U test, and N-gain.
The results revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group,
with a post-test mean score of 78.69 compared to 67.08 for the control group.
Statistical analysis (independent samples t-test) confirmed that this difference was
significant, t(70) = 6.484, sig < .001.
In conclusion, the Student-Teacher Conference strategy is significantly
more effective than the Lecturing strategy in enhancing students' speaking skills for
discussion texts. The study recommends the adoption of STC in EFL classrooms to
promote more effective and interactive speaking instruction.
