SKRIPSI THE IMPLEMENTATION OF HOTS IN ENGLISH MID- SEMESTER TEST OF MERDEKA CURRICULUM FOR THE 7th GRADERS AT SMPN 1 MUNGKID
The goal of this study was to examine the implementation of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in the English mid-semester test of the Merdeka Curriculum for seventh graders at SMPN 1 Mungkid. This research focused on identifying the extent to which HOTS were incorporated in the test items and determining the most dominant HOTS category used by the English teacher. The integration of HOTS in assessment is essential to support students' critical and creative thinking skills, which are central objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum. However, previous studies and classroom practices indicate that English assessments in Indonesia often emphasize lower-order cognitive skills, such as remembering and understanding, while higher-order cognitive domains receive limited attention. Teachers frequently face challenges in designing HOTS-based questions due to insufficient knowledge and experience. Despite the importance of HOTS-oriented assessments, research specifically analyzing the use of HOTS in English mid-semester tests at the junior high school level remains limited, particularly in the context of SMPN 1 Mungkid. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design to analyze the quality of the English mid-semester test items. The data were obtained from the test administered to seventh graders and analyzed using the revised Bloom's Taxonomy proposed by Anderson and Krathwohl (2015), focusing on the cognitive levels of analyzing (C4), evaluating (C5), and creating (C6). The findings revealed that the English mid-semester exam successfully incorporated HOTS across various question types, including multiple-choice, matching, short essay, and essay questions. Among the HOTS categories, analyzing (C4) was the most dominant, accounting for 54.5% of the items, followed by evaluating (30.3%) and creating (15.2%). These results indicate that the exam aligns with the principles of HOTS integration and supports the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum in fostering students' higher-order thinking skills.
