SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CARD SORT STRATEGY IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT READING COMPREHENSION FOR THE SEVENTH GRADERS OF SMPN 13 MAGELANG
To master English, learners should develop several essential skills, such as reading,
writing, listening, and speaking. Reading is an essential skill that should be
mastered. In SMPN 13, the students have difficulty with descriptive text reading
comprehension due to limited vocabulary mastery. Moreover, choosing an active
learning strategy for teaching reading comprehension was challenging for the
teachers.
This study aims to determine if there is a significant difference in descriptive
text reading comprehension between students taught using the Card Sort strategy
and those taught using the expository learning strategy with the graphic organizer.
This study also examines the effectiveness of the Card Sort strategy in descriptive
text reading comprehension for the seventh graders of SMPN 13 Magelang.
This quasi-experimental study used a non-equivalent control group design.
The population of this study consisted of the seventh graders at SMPN 13 Magelang
in the 2025/2026 academic year. The writer examined and analyzed classes VII A
and VII C, with VII C as the experimental group and VII A as the control group.
Pre- and post-tests were administered to both groups as research instruments. The
data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test and n-gain test in SPSS
version 27.
Based on the analyzed data, the independent sample t-test shows that the
significant value (2-tailed) from the independent sample t-test was 0.022, which is
lower than the significance level of 0.05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha)
is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Based on the n-gain test, the
experimental group achieved 56.83%, which falls within the enough category. In
contrast, the control group achieved 40.40% and is categorized as less effective.
In summary, the use of the Card Sort strategy positively affects the
descriptive text reading comprehension for the seventh graders of SMPN 13
Magelang since there is a significant difference between the students who were
taught using the Card Sort strategy and those who were taught using the expository
learning strategy with the graphic organizer. Furthermore, the Card Sort strategy is
effective enough in enhancing descriptive text reading comprehension for the
seventh graders at SMPN 13 Magelang. Thus, despite several challenges in
preparing the strategy, the Card Sort strategy can serve as an alternative for reading
comprehension.
