SKRIPSI DEVELOPING MANUAL BOOK FOR EDUCATIONAL POETRY WRITING IN CREATIVE WRITING: POETRY AND PROSE COURSE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
This study aims to develop a manual book for educational poetry writing as
an effort to enhance instructional support within the Creative Writing: Poetry and
Prose course at the higher education level. Poetry, as both an artistic and
pedagogical medium, plays a significant role in fostering creativity, critical
thinking, and emotional expression. Despite its importance, many students continue
to struggle to generate ideas, apply poetic devices effectively, and embed
educational values in their writing. These challenges are compounded by the limited
availability of structured learning resources that systematically guide students in
writing educational poetry.
The absence of comprehensive, pedagogically sound materials highlights an
urgent need for a dedicated instructional resource to scaffold students’ learning. To
address this gap, the present study adopts Plomp’s (2013) Design-Based Research
(DBR) model, which consists of three iterative stages: preliminary research,
prototyping, and assessment. This model provides a systematic framework that
integrates theoretical considerations with practical development, ensuring that the
resulting material is both contextually relevant and empirically grounded.
During the preliminary research phase, data were gathered through
questionnaires and interviews with students enrolled in the course. The findings
revealed a strong demand for learning materials that offer clear and accessible
explanations, step-by-step writing procedures, and prompts to stimulate creativity.
The prototyping phase involved the development of a comprehensive
manual that includes conceptual explanations of educational poetry, detailed
writing procedures, annotated model texts, guided exercises, and reflective
activities to support students’ metacognitive awareness. The prototype underwent
iterative revisions based on feedback from subject experts and creative writing
practitioners. In the assessment phase, expert evaluations indicated that the manual
met high standards of content relevance, pedagogical appropriateness, and media
presentation, with ratings placing it in the “Very Worthy” category.
Overall, the results demonstrate that the developed manual book is feasible,
pedagogically robust, and suitable for use as supplementary learning material in
higher education settings. It provides structured support that can assist students in
navigating the creative and educational dimensions of poetry writing. This study
contributes to the field of creative writing pedagogy by offering an empirically
informed instructional resource and by illustrating the applicability of the DBR
approach in educational material development.
