SKRIPSI THE USE OF LET’S READ ASIA MEDIA TO INCREASE THE NARRATIVE TEXT READING COMPREHENSION OF THE NINTH-GRADERS OF SMPN 1 TEGALREJO
Reading is one of the essential skills that must be mastered by students in
learning English as a foreign language. In junior high school, narrative text is an
important genre because it helps students build comprehension through story
structure, characters, and moral values. However, based on preliminary
observations and interviews with the English teacher, the ninth-graders of Class IX
E at SMPN 1 Tegalrejo experienced difficulties in understanding narrative texts.
Students struggled to identify main ideas, infer meaning, and interpret information.
Their reading motivation was also low.
This study aims to determine whether the use of Let’s Read Asia as a
medium can increase the learning motivation of the ninth-graders of SMPN 1
Tegalrejo and increase their narrative text reading comprehension. The writer
conducted a Classroom Action Research (CAR), consisting of a pre-cycle, Cycle I,
and Cycle II. The subjects were 32 students of Class IX E. The data were collected
through tests, observation, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using
both qualitative and quantitative methods.
The result of this study shows that the implementation of Let’s Read Asia
as a medium can increase both motivation and reading comprehension. Students
became more engaged during reading activities, showed higher involvement, and
demonstrated better understanding of the texts. The average score of students’
reading comprehension increased from the pre-cycle score of 43.75 (very poor
category) to 62.81 in Cycle I (fair category), and continued to rise to 79.06 in Cycle
II (good category). Furthermore, more than 75% of the students achieved the
Learning Objective Achievement Criteria (KKTP) of 77 in the final cycle. In terms
of motivation, students demonstrated greater enthusiasm, participation, and
persistence throughout the reading activities using Let’s Read Asia.
Therefore, the writer suggests that it is better for the students to be more
motivated during the teaching-learning process and increase their narrative text
reading comprehension. Meanwhile, the teacher is expected to use Let’s Read Asia
as a learning medium because of the many advantages that can be considered. In
addition, the other researcher can develop this study with different aspects or
learning materials and a wider scope in the future.
