SKRIPSI IMPLEMENTING ESCAPE ROOM STRATEGY TO INCREASE THE NARRATIVE TEXT READING COMPREHENSION OF THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF SMP NEGERI 11 MAGELANG
Reading is a fundamental skill that supports students’ academic development, particularly in understanding various types of texts. However, preliminary observations at SMPN 11 Magelang revealed that eighth-grade students faced several difficulties in reading narrative texts. These challenges included low motivation, limited engagement, and problems in comprehending key elements such as the main idea, specific information, vocabulary, references, and inferences. The first objective of this study is to identify the Escape Room strategy in increasing students' motivation in narrative text among eighth graders at SMP N 11 Magelang. The second objective is to determine the extent to which the Escape Room strategy increase the narrative text reading comprehension. This research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The participants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of 32 students from Class VIII B who demonstrated the problemsidentified during the preliminary observation. Data was collected through observation, questionnaire, documentation, and a reading test. The qualitative data were analysed using a qualitative analysis technique from data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing and verification, and quantitative data were calculated by averaging the test results. The findings show that the Escape Room strategy improved both students' motivation and reading comprehension. Observation results increased from 51.30% in the Pre-cycle to 67.20% in Cycle I, and 82.50% in Cycle II, indicating that students became more active and engaged. Their reading comprehension scores also improved, rising from 56.9 in the Pre-cycle to 67.18 in Cycle I and 81.71 in Cycle II. These results suggest that the implementation of the Escape Room strategy successfully increased students' motivation and improved their narrative text reading comprehension.
