SKRIPSI DEVELOPING “A HANDY GUIDE” SPEAKING MODULE FOR EFL LEARNERS AS LOCAL EMPLOYEES IN BALKONDES WANUREJO
This research aims to develop an English speaking module titled “A Handy Guide”
for local employees at Balkondes Wanurejo, a tourism village located near
Borobudur Temple, to enhance their communicative competence in real workplace
contexts. The study applies Design-Based Research (DBR) by Plomp (2013),
consisting of three main phases: the preliminary research, development or
prototyping, and assessment. The needs analysis identified that most employees
lacked formal English training, struggled with pronunciation and vocabulary, and
desired practical, job-related speaking materials.
Based on these findings, the module was designed around English for Specific
Purposes (ESP) principles, incorporating Communicative Language Teaching
(CLT) and Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approaches. It consists of five
contextual units—Greeting Guests, Giving Directions, Handling Complaints,
Describing Menus, and Talking About Local Culture—supported by bilingual
guidance, role-play, and situational dialogues. Expert validation from material and
media specialists rated the module as “Very Worthy” with an overall feasibility
score of 87%, confirming its pedagogical soundness and usability.
The user feasibility assessment involving 18 employees yielded an overall
satisfaction rate of 93.2%, showing that the module was engaging, relevant, and
effective in improving their speaking skills. These results demonstrate that the “A
Handy Guide” module is both feasible and practical for enhancing English
communication among local hospitality workers. The study provides theoretical
reinforcement for needs-based and communicative approaches in ESP material
design, and practically, it serves as a replicable model for other community-based
tourism contexts seeking to strengthen English proficiency and cultural interaction
in sustainable tourism development.
