SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PAIR WORK STRATEGY WITH POSTERS TO INCREASE THE ELEVENTH GRADERS’ WRITING SKILL ON DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT SMK CITRA MEDIKA MAGELANG
Ideally, teaching descriptive writing in vocational high schools should encourage creativity, collaboration, and active student participation. However, observations at SMK Citra Medika indicate that many students struggle with generating ideas, organizing sentences, and maintaining motivation while writing. Individual and group work often lead to uneven participation, with only a few students actively engaged. This condition highlights the need for innovative strategies and creative media that can effectively increase students' writing performance. This study aimed to investigate whether there was a significant difference in students' descriptive writing skills between those taught using pair work with posters and those taught using a lecturing strategy with textbook, as well as to determine the effectiveness of the pair work strategy with posters. Using a quasiexperimental design with non-equivalent pre-test and post-test groups, this study involved 71 eleventh-grade students, divided into an experimental class (n = 35) and a control class (n = 36). The experimental group received treatment through pair work with posters, while the control group was taught using a lecturing strategy with textbook. Data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, independent sample t-tests, and N-Gain scores. The results showed a significant difference between the two groups, with the experimental group outperforming the control group on the post-test, obtaining a significance value of 0.02, which is less than 0.05. The N-Gain score of the experimental group was 0.342 (Medium), while that of the control group was 0.1258 (Low). These results indicate that the pair work strategy with posters medium increased students' descriptive writing skills more effectively than the lecturing strategy. Thus, the pair work strategy with posters has been proven to be effective in increasing students' writing performance, although its effectiveness is categorized as medium. These findings suggest that English teachers should consider adopting thisstrategy and integrating poster media to encourage collaboration, creativity, and motivation in writing classes.
