SKRIPSI "DISCOVERING MODALITY AND SPEECH FUNCTION IN NARRATIVE TEXT OF THE ELEVENTH-GRADE ENGLISH TEXTBOOK BY THE INDONESIAN MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND CULTURE
The goal of this study was to examine the types of modalities and speech functions used in the narrative texts of the eleventh-grade English textbook published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. This research focused on understanding how modality and speech functions help shape meaning within the stories, offering insights into how interpersonal meanings are expressed in the textbook. Many students struggle with narrative texts, especially in understanding speakers' intentions, attitudes, and certainty through modality. They also find it hard to distinguish statements, commands, questions, and offers in dialogue. Past research focused on grammatical or thematic features of textbooks, leaving a gap in interpersonal meaning through modality and speech functions. This study aims to fill that gap with a detailed linguistic analysis of how narrative texts express communicative intentions. This study used Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on the modality and speech functions. It employed a qualitative design with documentation as the main data collection method. Data were taken from three Legend stories in the textbook: The Legend of the Holy Stone, The Legend of N'Daung Snake, and The Legend of the Crying Stone. To ensure trustworthiness, investigator triangulation involved two expert validators who examined and confirmed the accuracy and consistency of data interpretation. The findings showed that potentiality and ability (39.1%) were the most dominant modality, followed by inclination (26.1%), while statements were the most frequently used speech functions, followed by commands, questions, and offers. These findings indicate that the use of modality and speech functions contributes to the interpersonal dimension of the texts, aligning with the communicative objectives of English learning. In conclusion, the study reveals that the narrative texts in the textbook successfully integrate modality and speech functions to express interpersonal meanings, supporting students' understanding of authentic language use in accordance with the Merdeka Curriculum.
