SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF HESITATION PAUSES OF ASKING AND GIVING DIRECTIONS IN SPEAKING SKILL PRACTICE PRODUCED BY SEVENTH GRADERS AT SMPN 7 MAGELANG
English speaking activities are an important part of English language learning in Indonesian secondary schools, as students are expected to be able to communicate their ideas using English. However, many students still experience hesitation pauses when speaking English, which can affect their fluency and confidence. This study aimed to identify the types of hesitation pauses produced by students and to analyze the factors causing hesitation pauses during English speaking activities, particularly in giving directions. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data were collected through video recordings of students’ speaking performances, speaking transcripts, and semi-structured interviews. The subjects of this study were students of class 7F at SMPN 7 Magelang. The results showed that students produced two types of hesitation pauses, namely silent pauses and filled pauses. A total of 122 hesitation pauses were found, consisting of 96 silent pauses and 26 filled pauses. The interview results indicated that hesitation pauses were caused by several factors, including linguistic factors, cognitive factors, affective factors, and breathing-related factors.
