SKRIPSI USING ANNOTATION STRATEGY UTILIZING “KAMI” TO IMPROVE HORTATORY EXPOSITION READING COMPREHENSION OF THE ELEVENTH GRADERS IN SMA N 3 MAGELANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2023/2024
Reading comprehension involves grasping and interpreting text to understand
the information presented by the writer. Nevertheless, based on the writer’s
observations of the eleventh-grade students at SMAN 3 Magelang, it was found
that their reading comprehension was low. Moreover, students’ motivation was
similarly low. Consequently, identifying effective learning strategies is crucial
for accomplishing reading objectives. Based on the problem above, this study
aimed to examine whether the use of the Annotation Strategy with the Kami
annotation tool could increase eleventh-grade students' motivation at SMAN 3
Magelang and improve their reading comprehension of hortatory exposition
texts at SMAN 3 Magelang.
The writer conducted classroom action research (CAR). This research
was divided into a pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II. The subjects of this study
were 36 students in class XI at SMAN 3 Magelang. The writer collected data
using observation sheets, questionnaires, interviews, documentation, and tests.
The analysis of collected data clearly demonstrated that students were
more motivated in reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text after the
teacher implemented the Annotation Strategy utilizing the Kami annotation
tool. A comparison of data (observations, questionnaires, documentation, and
interviews) across the pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II indicated significant
improvement. Over half of the students actively participated in the lessons,
confidently answered questions, offered comments, and asked about the
material. Furthermore, the test results from the pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II
all showed improvement. The students' average score in the pre-cycle was
57.36; in cycle I, it rose to 68.61, and in cycle II, it reached 78.05. Based on
these findings, the use of the Annotation Strategy utilizing Kami effectively
increased the hortatory exposition reading comprehension among the eleventh
graders at SMAN 3 Magelang.
Based on these findings, the writer concluded that teachers can utilize
the Annotation Strategy and the Kami annotation tool to improve students’
reading comprehension. Students should maintain motivation throughout the
teaching-learning process, and teachers are strongly encouraged to employ a
variety of media and strategies to motivate students during the reading
comprehension activity.
