SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ‘WORD DETECTIVE STRATEGY’ INENHANCING THE SEVENTH GRADERS’ DESCRIPTIVE TEXT READING COMPREHENSION AT SMP NEGERI 4 MAGELANG
Reading comprehension is an important skill that helps students understand
and interpret written texts. In learning English, students need this skill to obtain
information and understand ideas presented in a passage. However, many students
still experience difficulties in comprehending English texts. Many seventh graders
at SMP Negeri 4 Magelang struggle to understand descriptive texts. Limited
vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and difficulty identifying the main ideas
and supporting details often cause these problems.
This study aimed to determine whether there is a significant difference
between the descriptive text reading comprehension of seventh graders at SMP
Negeri 4 Magelang who are taught using the “Word Detective” strategy and those
who are taught using the “Vocabulary Self-Collection” strategy and to find out the
effectiveness of the “Word Detective” strategy is in enhancing the seventh graders’
reading comprehension, particularly in understanding descriptive texts at SMP
Negeri 4 Magelang.
This study used a quasi-experimental design. The participants were 63
seventh graders at SMP Negeri 4 Magelang, class VII A and VII B. They were
divided into an experimental class and a control class. Pre-tests and post-tests were
administered to measure the students’ reading comprehension. The data were
analyzed using a classified testing, which contained normality, homogeneity tests,
and a hypothesis test, which contained calculation of the t-test, the Mann-Whitney
U test, and N-gain. The IBM SPSS Statistics program version 27.0.1 was utilized
to analyze the data.
The results showed that students in the experimental class improved
significantly. Their mean score increased from 60.62 in the pre-test to 81.56 in the
post-test. The N-Gain score of 0.40365 indicated a medium level of improvement.
Meanwhile, the control class improved slightly from 65.80 to 70.96 with an N-Gain
score of 0.00515, categorized as low improvement. The Mann–Whitney U test
showed a significant difference between the two groups with an Asymp. Sig. (2
tailed) value of 0.004.
In conclusion, the “Word Detective” strategy is significantly effective in
enhancing students’ reading comprehension. Students who were taught using this
strategy showed better improvement than those taught using the Vocabulary Self
Collection Strategy. Therefore, the study recommends to apply the “Word
Detective” strategy in teaching reading comprehension.
