SKRIPSI THE USE OF KWL STRATEGY WITH RESPONSE CARDS TO IMPROVE THE SEVENTH GRADERS’ NARRATIVE TEXT READING COMPREHENSION AT JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Reading is one of the important skills that students need to develop because it helps
them gain information and understand new knowledge. At the junior high school
level, students are expected to be able to comprehend narrative texts. However, in
reality, many students still face difficulties in understanding reading materials. They
often have low motivation, limited comprehension, and tend to be less active during
the learning process.
This study focuses on finding out how the use of the KWL (Know–Want–Learn)
strategy combined with Response Cards can influence students’ motivation and
improve their reading comprehension of narrative texts. It also aims to see whether
this strategy can make students more active and engaged during the learning
process.
This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted in two
cycles. The participants of this study were seventh-grade students of SMP Kristen
Indonesia Magelang. The data were collected through observations, tests,
questionnaires, and field notes to support both qualitative and quantitative analysis.
The results showed that there was a clear improvement in students’ motivation and
reading comprehension. Students’ motivation increased from 57.28% in the
preliminary stage to 77.28% in Cycle I and continued to improve to 80.83% in
Cycle II. In addition, the number of students who achieved the minimum passing
grade (KKM) also increased from 63.64% in the preliminary stage to more than
75% in Cycle II. During the learning process, students became more active, more
confident, and more involved in classroom activities.
In conclusion, the use of the KWL strategy combined with Response Cards can
effectively improve students’ motivation and their reading comprehension of
narrative texts. This strategy also helps create a more interactive and engaging
learning atmosphere, so students can participate more actively in the classroom
