A Paper: Magelang, English Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Tidar University of Magelang.

Reading is one of important factors in teaching English. Using realia media in teaching, can help the students understand the problem about English. The reason why the writer chooses the material is that it is one of the materials for the first year students in second semester and for the national exam. It is difficult to explain it to the students. The writer concludes that the teacher needs appropriate media to explain it effectively.

To know the appropriate media in teaching English procedure reading texts, the writer carries out a research in teaching English procedure texts in SMK Yudya Karya, Magelang. In this research, the writer compares two different treatment by using realia media and picture media to solve the problem above.

Follows: By reviewing related theories, the writer proposes two hypothesis as

1. There are some significant differences in the students mastery of English procedure reading texts between those who are taught using realia media and those are taught using picture media.

2. The students who are taught using the realia media comprehend procedure reading texts better than those who are taught using the picture.


In order to know the differences, the writer took 2 classes as samples among the ten available classes. The writer divided the two classes into two groups, each group consist of 38 students. They are treated in different techniques to know whether the different means are significant the writer uses t-test.

Based on the analysis of the data in the post test, the writer found that the t-test result is higher than the store in the t-table (6.51 bigger 2.00). It shows that the realia media in teaching procedure reading texts it was very effective.

Based on the result of the analysis, the writer concludes that there is significant difference in the students ability of English procedure reading texts and teaching English procedure reading texts by using reality media is more effective than using the picture media. Thus, the writer suggest the English teachers to use reality media in teaching reading of procedure ttexts.
