SKRIPSI USING SUGGESTOPEDIA TECHNIQUE IN INPROVING THE READING COMPREHENSION OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 1 MERTOYUDAN IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2011//2012

Reading is one of the language skills that should be taught in senior high school. One of the goals of learning English is to make the students able to communicate orally based on curriculum of 2006. As beginners in learning English, of course, the students find some difficulties in learning and reading English. Based on the observation to the eleventh science three grade students of SMAN 1 Mertoyudan, the writer identified that the students’ reading comprehension is still low. It is caused by many factors, such as limited of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and most of the teachers used same technique in teaching learning process.

To solve the problem, the writer attempts to use suggestopedia technique in teaching reading comprehension. It is hopped that the students will be able to enrich their reading comprehension. The students also have motivation, interested to study hard, so they can comprehend in reading English. With this technique, the writer also expected the students feel comfortable and didn’t feel bored anymore.

In this research, the writer used a classroom action research. The purpose of this research is to know the improvement of reading comprehension using suggestopedia technique to the eleventh science three grade students of SMAN 1 Mertoyudan in the school year 2010/2011.

As a result, the writer found that using suggestopedia technique in teaching reading to the eleventh science three grade students of SMAN 1 Mertoyudan made improvement of 13.13%. In Pre-Cycle, students’ mean of score was only 54.69. It belongs to poor category. The average score of Cycle I test was 60.00. It belongs to fair category. There was an improvement of students’ reading comprehension from Pre-Cycle to Cycle I, that was 5.31%. The average score of Cycle II test reached 67.82 and belongs to fair category, there was 7.82% improvement. There was also a change on students’ behavior after using suggestopedia technique in teaching reading.

Based on above result, the writer concludes that using suggestopedia technique is effective to improve the reading comprehension and the writer has some suggestions. For the students, it is better for them to make their reading skill more fluent and enjoy by using suggestopedia technique in reading exercise and to be active during learning process. It is better for the English teacher to use suggestopedia technique in teaching reading and for the readers that are learning reading it is better for them to improve reading comprehension by using many interesting techniques including this technique.
