SKRIPSI USING INDIRECT CODED FEEDBACK TO IMPROVE THE RECOUNT TEXT WRITING SKILL OF THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF SMPN 3 GRABAG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2013/2014

One of the skills in English is writing. In relation to this, the result of the recount text writing skill of the eighth graders of SMPN 3 Grabag in the even semester is not satisfying yet. The average score of the recount text writing test is 55. The students’ scores are still under the minimum achievement criteria of 70. This condition is caused by both internal and external factors of the students.
The objectives of the research are firstly, to know whether the use of indirect coded feedback can improve the motivation of the eighth graders of SMPN 3 Grabag in learning recount text writing, and secondly, to know whether the use of indirect coded feedback can greatly improve the recount text writing skill of the eighth graders of SMPN 3 Grabag.
This research is a classroom action research. The setting of the research is class VIIID of SMPN 3 Grabag in the school year 2013/20014. There are 37 students, consisting of 20 male and 17 female students. In each cycle of this research, the writer used observation, questionnaire, documentation, and a writing test to collect the data. The writer then analyzed the data using both qualitative and quantitative data.
Students of VIIID of SMPN 3 Grabag in the school year 2013/2014 have high motivation after the writer used Indirect Coded Feedback. The data of the observation and questionnaire show that their participation increased greatly. The percentage average from Pre-Cycle to Cycle II was 44.05%, 64.19%, and 80.63%. The students became highly motivated and active in improving their recount text writing skill. In term of recount text writing skill, they made improvement of 17.08 after they got Indirect Coded Feedback. In addition, all of the performance indicators have been successfully answered. The average score of Pre-Cycle test was 56.84. Unfortunately, the average score of Cycle I test was 65.22. It had not fulfilled the performance indicator yet. Surprisingly in Cycle II, the students were able to make a satisfying achievement. The students’ average score in the Cycle II was 73.92. The students’ scores have fulfilled the performance indicator.
Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that the use of Indirect Coded Feedback can greatly improve the motivation of the eighth graders in learning recount text writing and their recount text writing skill.
The writer suggests English teachers to master and implement the Indirect Coded Feedback in teaching writing. The writer also gives suggestion to students to be more active and to master the Indirect Coded Feedback in learning writing.
