Dialogue is conversation between two or more people who share their ideas. In English it is developed to improve the ability of the students in communication using English. The dialogue can be communicative if it requires the four maxims; they are quality, quantity, relation, and manner. In constructing the dialogue students need to pay attention to the use of maxims in their dialogues. To make clear and effective communication the students should have an engagement in order to be successful and effective in the communication. They should have the same idea.

The objectives of the study are to know whether the dialogues that are used by the students fulfill four maxims or not and the most dominant type of maxim used in the dialogues which are used by the XI graders of SMA N 1 Candimulyo in the school year 2013/2014.

This research belongs to a qualitative research. The writer took the XI IPS 3 graders as the subject of the research. To collect the data the writer used documentation technique. There are fifteen data which are taken from the dialogues that have been made by the students. Having collected the data, the writer analyzed the types of maxims which are used in the dialogues by using descriptive analysis. Then the writer identified the most dominant type of maxim which is used by the students in their dialogues.

Based on the data analysis, the writer found almost a half of the students have used all four types of maxims in their dialogues. Those are maxim of quality. Maxim of manner, maxim of quantity, and maxim of relation. The most dominant maxim that is used by the students in their dialogues is the maxim of relation with the total frequency 21 from 62 maxims with the percentage of 33.87 percent. Then for the frequency of maxims of manner is the least maxim with the total frequency 13 from 62 maxims that used by the students with the percentage 20.97 percent, maxim of quality with the percentage 22.58 percent and for the frequency of maxim of quantity with percentage 22.58 percent.
