SKRIPSI USING SNOWBALL THROWING TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE FIFTH GRADERS OF SDN BAWANG TEMPURAN MAGELANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013

The current English lesson curriculum indicates that teaching English in elementary school as a local subject from the forth up to the sixth grades focus on speaking and writing skill. Related to speaking, students need vocabulary to support their ability to produce speech. To achieve this purpose, there are some factors that influence the process of acquiring English. The factors are coming from the teacher and the students themselves. One of the factors identified is the classroom atmosphere which really influences the teaching learning process. Teacher has an important role to conduct the classroom activity in order to make the students able to participate in an effective teaching learning process.

The objectives of this study are to know that Snowball Throwing technique is able to improve teaching learning process of vocabulary of the fifth graders of SDN Bawang Tempuran Magelang in the academic year 2012/2013 and how great the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery taught using Snowball Throwing technique to the students’ English vocabulary mastery of SDN Bawang Tempuran Magelang in the academic year 2012/2013 is.

To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher conducted a classroom action research. It was held at SD Negeri Bawang Tempuran Magelang. The subject of the study was the students of the fifth grade.

The researcher carried out classroom action research in four phases. There were pre-cycle, cycle I, II and III. First, in pre cycle the researcher made some observation and gave a test without giving any technique in teaching learning process. Next, in cycle I until III the researcher gave some observation and gave the test of vocabulary using Snowball throwing technique.

Based on the researcher’s observation, the students were able to participate the classroom activity effectively during the teaching-learning process. The analysis of the data shows that there is a great improvement of the students achievement following the pre-test compared with the result of the three tests in Cycle I, II and III. The total percentage score of the students were about 35.63% In the Cycle I the students made an improvement at about 17.50%. Meanwhile in the cycle II the students’ average score increased again at about 6.88% and 11.25% in Cycle III.

Based on the data, the researcher concludes that teaching vocabulary in elementary school using snowball throwing technique is beneficial. It can be concluded that snowball throwing technique considerably good choices for English teacher.
