SKRIPSI USING DARTS TECNIQUE TO IMPROVE THE READING SKILL OF HE TENTH GRDE STUDENTS OF MAN 1 MAGELANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2012/2013

Reading is one of the four language skills that should be developed by students in learning English, because it has many important elements such as vocabulary and grammar. However, the students’ reading skill of MAN 1 Magelang is not satisfactory. There are many factors that influence it. One of them is the students’ difficulties in understanding English texts.

The purpose of this research is to improve the students’ reading skill using DARTs technique. There are two main objectives in this research. Firstly, to know whether DARTs technique can improve the teaching learning process in the reading class of the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Magelang in the School year 2012/2013. Secondly, to know how great the improvement of the reading skill of the students who are taught using DARTs technique.

This action research was conducted in three cycles, in which each cycle consited of four steps, planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The writer took the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Magelang as the subject of the research. There are 21 students, 7 boys and 14 girls. In collecting the data the writer used observations, questionnaires, and test. She gave the pre-cycle test before the students were introduced to DARTS technique. In each cycle, after the teaching learning process using DARTs technique, the students were also given a reading test. There was a change of the students’ behavior in reading learning when they were taugh using DARTs technique. In Cycle I, it could be seen that the students were not ready to join the reading class. In Cycle II, the students were ready to join the learnig activity and were interested in DARTS technique. In Cycle III, the students had better participation and spirit to join the teaching learning activity. Besides, there was an improvement of the students reading skill. The mean of students’ score in Pre-Cycle test was 54.76, in Cycle I was 60.95. In Cycle II, the mean of score was 71.43 and 84.28 was the of score in Cycle III.

Based on the above result, the writer concludes that the use of DARTS technique can improve the teaching learning process of the reading class. There is also a great improvement of the reading skill of the tenth grade students of MAN I Magelang who are taught using DARTs technique. The writer sugests that DARTs technique as one of the alternative technique in teaching reading.
