SKRIPSI THE INFLUENCE OF USING THE BUSUU APPLICATION AS LEARNING MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILLS OF SEVENTH GRADERS AT SMP N 1 WINDUSARI.
One of the key language skills that students must acquire in learning English is speaking. However, many students still face difficulties in communicating due to limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and insufficient speaking practice. Therefore, appropriate learning media are needed to improve students’ speaking skills. This study aimed to determine whether the Busuu Application significantly affected students’ speaking skills and to examine the significance of the difference between students taught using the Busuu Application and those taught using the Memrise Application. This study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental design involving seventh-grade students at SMP N 1 Windusari. The experimental class consisted of 16 students who learned using the Busuu Application, while the control class consisted of 14 students who learned using the Memrise Application. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test speaking tests using a speaking scoring rubric assessing fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehensibility. The findings showed that students’ speaking skills improved after the treatment. The experimental class mean score increased from 7.75 to 13.25 while the control class mean score increased from 7.64 to 10.36. Overall, the experimental class demonstrated greater improvement than the control class. The Independent Samples T-test revealed that the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was less than 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. The N-Gain analysis also showed that the experimental class achieved a higher level of improvement than the control class. The findings indicate that the Busuu Application was more effective than the Memrise Application in improving students’ speaking skills. Therefore, the Busuu Application can be used as an effective learning medium to support the speaking ability of seventh-grade students at SMP N 1 Windusari.
