SKRIPSI ANALYSIS OF READABILITY IN THE STUDENTS’ FINAL BOOK PROJECT OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION SUBJECT
The shift towards student-centered learning in Indonesian higher education has highlighted Project-Based Learning (PjBL), in which students produce authentic outputs such as textbooks. In the Department of English Education of Universitas Tidar, sixth-semester students undertake a final book project for the Intercultural Communication course as a PjBL assignment. However, although this project aims to demonstrate applied writing skills and mastery of the material, the readability level of the textbooks written by students and the specific linguistic factors that influence it have not been empirically evaluated. Without such analysis, it remains unclear whether these materials achieve their pedagogical goal of accessible content for the intended reader. Thisstudy aimsto identify the readability level of final book projects by students and analyze the highest categories that influence readability. Using a descriptive qualitative design, this study employed documentation as a data collection technique. The primary data source was the complete text content of one final book project. The core analysis was conducted using TextEvaluator, a multidimensional Natural Language Processing (NLP) tool developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which measures text readability based on eight linguistic components. The results of the study show that the textbooks written by students have a high level of readability. The average TextEvaluator readability score of 1.248 indicate that the text is appropriate for advanced academic reading level. Analysis of the eight components identified three highest categories contributing to this high readability level: Very Dense Academic Vocabulary, High Level of Word Unfamiliarity, and Prominent Abstract or Low Concrete. The study concludes that while the students successfully demonstrated content mastery by replicating the formal register of expert academic discourse, the textbook shows a gap in executing the core pedagogical function of simplifying and scaffolding complex ideas for a learner audience. The study suggests that educators should integrate explicit instruction on audience awareness and readability strategies, students should cultivate a teacher-writer mindset, and future researchers should expand this inquiry through comparative and interventional studies.
