SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF INFLECTIONAL MORPHEME IN RECOUNT TEXTS IN THE GRADE IX ENGLISH TEXTBOOK ENTITLED ‘ENGLISH FOR NUSANTARA
This study employed a content analysis method to analyze the inflectional morphemes found in recount texts in the Grade IX English textbook entitled “English for Nusantara”. The study aimed to identify the types and functions of inflectional morphemes occurring in the selected recount texts. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles et al. (2014), consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The classification and analysis of inflectional morphemes were based on Yule’s (2010) theory. The findings revealed a total of 111 inflectional morphemes distributed across seven types: past tense, plural, possessive, third person singular, past participle, present participle, and comparative morphemes. Past tense morphemes were the most frequently occurring type with 51 occurrences, followed by plural morphemes with 45 occurrences. Present participles appeared 7 times, comparative morphemes 3 times, while third person singular and past participle morphemes occurred 2 times each. Possessive morphemes appeared only once, and no superlative morphemes were found in the analyzed texts. Furthermore, the identified inflectional morphemes functioned as grammatical markers expressing tense, number, possession, comparison, aspect, and subject-verb agreement without changing the grammatical category of the root words. The findings indicate that the recount texts in “English for Nusantara” contain various examples of inflectional morphemes that reflect the grammatical characteristics of recount texts. Therefore, the textbook can serve as a useful source for learning English morphology, particularly inflectional morphemes, in junior high school contexts.
