SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING STRATEGY VIA WHATSAPP VOICE NOTES IN TEACHING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT SPEAKING SKILL AT SMPN 5 MAGELANG.

In English learning, speaking is one of the skills students must master. However, in practice, students still face difficulties; some students have limitations, such as lacking fluency, low self-confidence, and even difficulty developing ideas in descriptive texts. Consequently, this highlighted the need for an alternative strategy and appropriate medium to address the problems experienced by students. Furthermore, the objective of this study is to determine the significant differences and to measure the effectiveness of the application of the Self-Directed Learning strategy and Describing Picture Strategy via WhatsApp Voice Notes in teaching descriptive texts to improve the speaking skills of 8th-grade students. In addition, this study employed a quasi-experimental design. The study involved two classes: Class 8H as the experimental group and Class 8G as the control group, with a total of 60 students. Moreover, data were collected through pre-tests and posttests, which were then analyzed using IBM SPSS version 27. The results of this research showed a significant increase in the experimental group compared to the control group. Furthermore, the Mann-Whitney U test showed that the p-value was 0.001, which means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Additionally, the experimental group had an effect, as evidenced by an N-gain score of 0.2415, which fell into the low category. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the implementation of the SelfDirected Learning strategy via WhatsApp Voice Notes is more effective than the Describing Picture strategy via WhatsApp Voice Notes in improving students’ speaking skill related to descriptive texts. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of this strategy falls into the low category. Therefore, it is recommended that future researchers apply this strategy over a longer period to achieve appropriate learning results.
