SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CUBING TECHNIQUE THROUGH GOOGLE DOCS ON THE ELEVENTH GRADERS’ DESCRIPTIVE TEXT WRITING SKILL AT SMA NEGERI KERJO
A critical component in teaching English, especially for students learning English as a foreign language is writing skill. Despite its importance, writing remains one of the most challenging language skills for EFL learners, especially while writing a descriptive text. Students find difficulties in writing, one of which is due to generating the ideas and appropriate digital learning media. Applying techniques in writing such as Cubing technique and Google Docs as digital learning media into the classroom can be an effective solution. Cubing technique can help students to generating the ideas by using six sides of the cube and Google Docs can help students reduce typo by suggestions feature. This study aimed to find out the significant difference and how high the difference between students who are taught using Cubing technique through Google Docs and students who are taught using Free Writing technique through Google Docs. This study applied a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. There were 70 students from grade XI of SMA Negeri Kerjo, divided into two groups using purposive sampling: grade XI F1 was the control group and was given treatment by using Free Writing technique through Google Docs and XI F2 was the experimental group and was given treatment by using Cubing technique through Google Docs. Pre- and post-test were conducted to measure students’ writing skill. The results of the Independent Sample T-test show a significant difference between the two groups Students in the experimental groups show better performance in writing descriptive text. The experimental group’s N-Gain score (0.63) is also higher than the control group’s (0.37), indicating a greater improvement. Meanwhile the writing component that improved in the experimental group was content, which increased by 5.6 points. This indicates that the Cubing Technique effectively helps students generate their ideas. In conclusion, although both techniques support writing development, Cubing technique was proven to be more effective. This technique can lead better results in writing. Teachers are advised to apply Cubing technique into writing technique to improve students’ writing performance and use another learning media that can help students in writing. Further studies could explore the effectiveness of Cubing technique combined with other digital learning medium on different types of texts.
