Teaching descriptive text in junior high school should enable students to actively participate in classroom learning. However, based on the field's previous observations in seventh grade at SMP Negeri 2 Secang, students’ reading skills remained relatively low. Therefore, appropriate teaching techniques are needed to help students improve their reading skills. This study aimed to describe the implementation of the scanning technique in teaching descriptive texts, to describe students' learning motivation during its implementation, and to determine the extent to which the technique improved the reading skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Secang in the academic year 2025/2026. This study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, conducted in two cycles involving 30 seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Secang. Data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The findings revealed that the scanning technique was successfully implemented in teaching descriptive text reading and had a positive impact on both students’ motivation and reading achievement. Students’ motivation, as measured through classroom observation, improved from an average score of 44.99 in the preCycle to 72.66 in Cycle I and 86.66 in Cycle II. Students became more active, attentive, and engaged throughout the learning process. In addition, their average reading score increased significantly from 61.5 in pre-Cycle to 72.6 in Cycle I and 85.5 in Cycle II, indicating continuous improvement in reading skill. The scanning technique also helped students identify specific information more quickly and accurately when reading descriptive text. It can be concluded that the scanning technique is effective in improving the motivation and descriptive text reading skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Secang in the 2025/2026 academic year.
