SKRIPSI EXPLORING STUDENTS‟ ENGAGEMENT IN PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PJBL) ASSIGNMENT ON ESSAY WRITING CLASS AT UNIVERSITAS TIDAR
In Indonesian education setting, universities must meet eight Key Performance Indicators (IKU-PTN), specifically focusing on graduates' career readiness and collaborative classes. To achieve these, Universitas Tidar utilizes Project-Based Learning (PJBL) in the Essay Writing course. However, low student engagement remains a challenge that may hinder these institutional goals. This qualitative study aims to explore the type of student engagement and challenges faced during Project-Based Learning (PJBL) implementation. To collect data, open-ended questionnaire, semi-structured interview, and classroom observation were conducted with fifth-semester students of the English Education Department in Essay Writing class during 2023/2024 academic year. Questionnaire was distributed to 37 respondents and interview was conducted with four interviewees. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The results revealed that students demonstrated complex and advanced engagement across three dimensions, with behavioural engagement scoring the highest level among them. Behavioural engagement was seen in active peer participation, cognitive engagement through strategic planning in the writing process, and emotional engagement through a duality of feeling challenged by the workload yet enjoying the collaborative freedom. This prominent behavioural aspect served as the primary driver for students to maintain task execution. Despite these, students frequently encountered challenges during the initial planning and drafting phases. These findings indicated that Project-Based Learning (PJBL) can support students to actively engage across all dimensions in a writing setting. Therefore, it is suggested that instructors provide more structured scaffolding during the early stages of Project-Based Learning (PJBL) to help students navigate initial complexities.
