SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS’ AWARENESS TOWARD TABOO LANGUAGE: A SOCIOLINGUISTIC STUDY WITH GENDER INSIGHTS

Language reflects social values, norms, and identity, including expressions considered inappropriate in certain contexts. As future educators, English Education students are expected to understand taboo language and its social implications. This study aims to analyze students’ awareness of taboo language and examine gender differences. This study employed a mixed-method design. The participants were students of the English Education Department. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, a questionnaire, and observation of WhatsApp group conversations. The findings show that most students demonstrate a high level of awareness, while others fall into a moderate level, with none classified as low. Students generally understand the definition and types of taboo language and recognize that its use depends heavily on context, relationship, and social setting. The observations also indicate that students avoid using taboo expressions in formal academic discussions. Furthermore, no significant difference is found between female and male students in terms of awareness. In conclusion, English Education students show strong awareness of taboo language and are able to consider its appropriate use in communication.
