SKRIPSI AN EXPERIMENT ON EDUCANDY STUDIO MEDIA TO ENHANCE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ DESCRIPTIVE TEXT READING COMPREHENSION

This study was initiated by a fundamental problem in descriptive text reading comprehension, in which seventh graders at SMP Negeri 1 Tegalrejo demonstrated low reading comprehension. This issue arises from students’ difficulties in understanding vocabulary, identifying main ideas, and recognizing text structure in descriptive texts. The main obstruction also comes from conventional teaching methods, which are dominated by inactive media such as picture media. The study aims to examine whether there is a significant difference in the reading comprehension of descriptive texts between students taught using the Educandy Studio media and those taught using picture media, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the Educandy Studio media in improving the reading comprehension of descriptive texts among seventh graders at SMP Negeri 1 Tegalrejo during the 2025/2026 school year. This study used quantitative research methods with a quasi-experimental design. The samples were collected from seventh graders at SMP Negeri 1 Tegalrejo using purposive sampling, with class VII A as the experimental group and class VII D as the control group. The control group was taught using picture media, while the experimental group was taught using Educandy Studio media. The instrument used was a pre-test and a post-test, and the results were analyzed using SPSS 27. The results showed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, as evidenced by the independent sample t-test (p < 0.001; p < 0.05). The results also showed that the use of Educandy Studio media is effective in improving seventh graders descriptive text reading comprehension at research context. This is supported by the N-Gain score of the experimental group, which reached 0.57 or 57.67%, placing the improvement in the "enough" category, while the control group achieved only 40.67% in the "less effective" category. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that Educandy Studio media is a practical and recommended tool for teaching descriptive text reading comprehension. It is recommended that English teachers incorporate game-based learning media like Educandy Studio as an alternative to conventional picture media to create a more active and interactive learning environment. For further research, it is recommended to conduct twelve treatments to see whether longer exposure to the media can lead to even better outcomes, and to ensure better internet connectivity and the availability of computer labs before implementation.
