SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ZEP QUIZ TO ENHANCE THE EIGHTH GRADERS' NARRATIVE TEXT READING COMPREHENSION AT SMP NEGERI 1 PAGERUYUNG

Reading comprehension plays a crucial role in English learning, particularly in understanding narrative texts. However, based on the writer's observations of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Pageruyung, they still struggle to understand narrative text content and have relatively low motivation to read. Therefore, there is a need for supporting media that can help students improve their reading comprehension skills and increase their motivation to read. Zep Quiz is a digital tool that can be used as an alternative to address this issue. This study aimed to investigate whether there was a significant difference in students’ narrative reading comprehension between those taught using Zep Quiz and those taught using Blooket. A quantitative approach with a quasiexperimental design was employed. The participants consisted of 64 eighth-grade students, including 32 students in Class 8C as the experimental group and 32 students in Class 8D as the control group. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, the homogeneity test, the Mann–Whitney U test, and the N-Gain test in SPSS Statistics V27. The experimental group’s mean score improved from 56.41 to 64.69, while the control group’s mean increased from 59.84 to 63.28. However, the Mann–Whitney U test produced an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.914 (>0.05), indicating that there was no significant difference between the two groups. The N-Gain result for the experimental group was 0.0804, which is classified as low. This finding indicates that the effectiveness of Zep Quiz in improving eighth-grade students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts was low. In conclusion, although students taught using Zep Quiz showed a slightly greater improvement in mean scores than those taught using Blooket, the difference was not statistically significant. Therefore, Zep Quiz was not proven to be more effective than Blooket in improving eighth-grade students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts at SMP Negeri 1 Pageruyung
