SKRIPSI DEVELOPING LOCAL WISDOM-BASED SUPPLEMENTARY LEARNING MATERIAL USING CARRD.CO FOR THE 9TH GRADERS’ NARRATIVE TEXT READING SKILLS AT SMPN 3 MAGELANG
Reading was considered an essential skill in learning English, particularly for understanding narrative texts. However, many ninth-grade students in SMPN 3 Magelang still experienced difficulties due to limited vocabulary, low motivation, and the lack of engaging learning materials. In addition, the available materials were often not closely related to students’ cultural backgrounds, making them less meaningful and not engaging for students, Therefore, integrating local wisdom into interactive and fun digital learning materials was seen to help students connect narrative texts with their cultural identity and improve their reading comprehension. This study aimed to develop a web-based supplementary learning material entitled “Once Upon a Time in Magelang” through carrd.co to support ninth-grade students’ of SMPN 3 Magelang narrative text reading skills by integrating local wisdom into the learning content. This study employed the Design and Development Research (DDR) approach proposed by Richey and Klein (2007), consisting of three phases: analysis, design and development, and evaluation. In the analysis phase, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 31 students and questionnaire for a class teacher to identify learning needs. The findings indicated that students needed interactive, accessible, and mobile-friendly digital materials, while teachers required materials that were aligned with the curriculum and easy to distribute. Based on these results, a Carrd.co-based webpage was developed, consisting of a landing page, home page, introduction section, and four narrative story sections equipped with a vocabulary corner, exercises, and quizzes integrated through Wayground. The evaluation results showed that the developed product achieved a high level of feasibility. The media aspect obtained a score of 83.5 out of 100 (83.5%), categorized as very feasible, covering layout, visual design, navigation, interactivity, and usability. Meanwhile, the material aspect obtained a score of 33 out of 40 (82.5%), also categorized as very feasible, indicating that the content was appropriate, well-structured, and aligned with learning objectives. These findings suggest that the developed webpage and its materials were suitable to support students’ narrative text reading skills. In conclusion, the “Once Upon a Time in Magelang” webpage was considered a feasible and effective supplementary learning material for supporting ninth-grade students’ reading skills. It is suggested that teachers utilize this type of culturally integrated digital material to enhance students’ engagement, and future researchers may further develop similar materials with broader content and wider implementation.
