SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING THE SOURCES OF ERRORS IN COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAYS WRITTEN BY FIFTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ESSAY WRITING COURSE AT UNIVERSITAS TIDAR

After observing the mid-term test results of the Essay Writing Course, students were still discovered committing errors that were characterized by incomplete rule application, false analogy, overgeneralization, and the application of Indonesian rules and structures. Based on these problems, the writer was interested in investigating the factors of students’ errors, particularly on the sources and the causes of errors. In investigating both factors, the writer adapted Brown’s theory (2007) to investigate the sources of errors in students’ writing and Norrish’s theory (1983) to explore the causes of errors based on students’ perspectives. This study employed descriptive qualitative research design to deeply understand the phenomenon of students’ errors using various instruments, including document analysis, questionnaires, and interviews. The selected participants consisted of 62 students from the class of 2023 who were previously enrolled in the Essay Writing Course. The findings indicated all sources of errors in students’ essays, namely interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communication strategy. However, intralingual transfer was discovered as the most dominant source of errors, implying that students’ errors were orientated from their difficulties and lack of knowledge in applying English rules. On the other hand, the findings also understood all causes of errors based on students’ perspectives, namely carelessness, translation, and first-language interference, with carelessness as the primary cause of errors because students generally ignored English rules due to their priority to develop content and ideas during limited time in writing. Furthermore, the findings of this study indicate the importance of emphasizing English writing rules in teaching and learning process of the Essay Writing Course for both students and lecturers.
