SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TEAM GAMES TOURNAMENT WITH RACE MAP GAME TO IMPROVE THE EIGHTH GRADERS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXTS
Narrative texts are one type of text taught at the junior high school level for reading comprehension, and students still struggle to understand them. Students are still unable to identify the main ideas and follow the entire story. Creating and using effective learning media and employing appropriate teaching strategies can help students overcome these obstacles, making reading activities more enjoyable and effective. Thisstudy integrated TGT with the Race Map Game as a learning medium to make the learning process more interactive and enjoyable. This study aims to determine the difference in students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts between those who are taught using the TGT learning model with the Race Map Game and those taught using the STAD learning model with the Race Map Game. This study also evaluates the effectiveness of the TGT, using the Race Map Game as a learning medium, in improving students' reading comprehension of narrative texts. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group for pretest and posttest. This study employed a purposive sampling technique, selecting two classes comprising eighth-grade boarding students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Alternatif Magelang. The instruments used were a pre-test and a post-test. The data were not normally distributed, and the variances between groups differed. The study employed the nonparametric Mann-Whitney test to test the hypothesis. The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed that a Sig. (2-tailed) 0.033 as a result, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha ) is accepted. These results indicate a significant difference in narrative reading comprehension between students taught using the TGT learning model and the Race Map Game, and those taught using the STAD learning model and the Race Map Game. Therefore, the Team Games Tournament (TGT) learning model combined with the Race Map Game can improve students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts. The mean N-Gain score for the experimental group was 0.54 (medium), while that for the control group was 0.44 (medium). These results indicate that using the Team Games Tournament (TGT) learning model, combined with the Race Map Game as a learning medium, has proven effective in improving students’ reading comprehension, particularly with narrative texts.
